Register for a Library Card:
To register for a library card, please bring photo identification with proof of your current address to the Main Check Out Desk (i.e. piece of mail, utility bill with your name and address). Children ages 4 and older may register for a library card in the Children’s Room with a parent or guardian’s photo identification and proof of current address.
If you do not have a current permanent address or are unable to come into the library, you may get a local use Melrose Public Library card. If you cannot physically come to the library, please call and ask to speak with a circulation librarian regarding our homebound delivery application, 781-665-2313.
Replace Lost Library Cards:
Please tell us immediately if your card is lost. Photo identification is required in order to obtain a replacement card.
Check Out Materials:
If your library account is in good standing (your account is under $10.00, there are no long overdue materials, and the account is not expired) you may take out an unlimited number of materials.
Your library card number or photo identification must be presented to borrow materials. If picking up materials on behalf of another patron, the library card number for the items on hold must be presented in order to check out.
You are responsible for all materials borrowed on your library card. Your card may be used at all NOBLE (North Of Boston Library Exchange) libraries.
Materials that are currently checked out or only available at another NOBLE library may be requested for delivery to Melrose. You may place a request yourself by signing into your library account online or with a library staff member at any desk. The typical time for an item to arrive, if on a shelf in another library, is 3-5 business days. If picking up materials on behalf of another patron, the library card number for the items on hold must be presented in order to check out. Materials that are not available within NOBLE may be available through the state-wide system, CommonwealthCatalog.
Items owned and checked out from the Melrose Public Library may be eligible for automatic renewal. Automatic renewals happen on the day an item is due IF: there are renewals remaining and if no other patron has placed a hold on the item(s). You will receive an email if there is an email address on file notifying you of the renewal status (maximum of 2 renewals). If you would like to add or change your email address for your account, please speak with a library staff member.
Manual renewals may be done online, by telephone, or in person. To renew materials online, you may sign into your library account with your library card number and Personal Identification Number (PIN). If you do not know your PIN, please come to the library to reset it.
Items may be renewed by calling the library, 781-665-2313; you will need either your library card number or the item barcode. If renewing in person, please present your library card, photo id, or the item you wish to renew at the Main Check Out Desk.
Items from any NOBLE library may be returned at the Melrose Public Library. Library materials may be returned at any time during library hours. If the library is closed, please use our book drop located next to our main parking lot. An item is late if not returned or renewed by midnight on the due date.
Items from other public libraries in Massachusetts libraries may also be returned at the Melrose Public Library, however, will not be checked in until they arrive at their home library — this may take several days.
Select Reference materials circulate for 3 days and are not renewable.
- DVDs circulate for 1 week.
- Magazines, music CDs, and new books circulate for 2 weeks.
- Books on CD circulate for 4 weeks.
- Older books, large print books, paperback books, Young Adult books, Graphic Novels, and most Children’s materials circulate for 4 weeks.
All materials, except Quick Pick titles, are renewable up to two times if there are no pending reserves.
Materials borrowed from a NOBLE library and checked out in Melrose will have the following loan periods:
- Printed materials (i.e. hardcovers, paperbacks, large print book) – 2 weeks
- Media materials (i.e. DVDs, music CDs, BlueRay) – 1 week
- Audio books (books on CD and Playaways) – 2 weeks
NOBLE materials are renewable up to two times if there are no pending reserves on the title.
Materials borrowed from the Commonwealth Catalog have a loan period of 4 weeks and are not renewable.
Most library materials may be renewed up to two times as long as no reserves are pending.
If the condition of an item at the time of return makes it no longer suitable for circulation to other patrons, it may require removal from the collection. Damaged materials will be assessed on a case by case basis by library staff and a replacement cost may be applied.
If an item from any library is lost, the patron is responsible for paying the library’s item replacement cost. A new copy of certain Melrose-owned items may be accepted in lieu of payment, with approval of a library supervisor.
Some libraries do not accept replacement copies. Before purchasing a replacement copy, please speak with a library supervisor.
Located within the Main Lobby, our Quick Pick collection includes bestseller fiction and nonfiction titles. These titles are available on a first come basis and are not holdable. Quick Picks circulate for two weeks and are not renewable.
