Children’s Summer Reading Club 2019

June 17th-August 9th

Children of all ages may participate in the library’s summer reading club! Readers earn beads for their time spent reading. Collect all eight planets of the Solar System! Pre-readers can register for our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Fun activities will be held during the week of June 17th. Registration for Summer Reading begins the week of June 17th and continues all summer long.

A “Universe of Stories” is sponsored by Melrose Public Library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, the Massachusetss Board of Library Commissioners, and the Friends of the Melrose Public Library.

Pre-School Programs

 

Basket and Blanket Family Concert Series

The Melrose Public Library and the North Suburban Child and Family Resource Network are collaborating to bring a fantastic concert series this summer.  Pack your picnic basket, grab a blanket and enjoy a summer’s night with your neighbors.  All shows will be on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at either the Melrose Public Library Lawn or The Beebe Estate Lawn.  In case of rain, the show will be held at the First Congregational Church on West Foster St. (Food is not allowed in the church.)

Baby Steps 0-18 months
This program introduces babies ages 0-18 mos. and their caregivers to the library and the wonderful world of books! Join us for 30 minutes of finger plays, rhymes, lap songs, stories, and fun. Baby Steps will be held on
Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m.

*Drop off your stuffed animal anytime on Thursday, 7/25 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Return the next morning at 10:30 for stories and a slideshow of the stuffed animals antics during the night!

Construction Tuesdays Ages 5-12

Bookworms!  Book Group for 2nd & 3rd Graders  

Tuesday, July 9th  and August 13th 3:00 p.m.

Join our new bookgroup for 2nd & 3rd graders.  Come and discuss what you’ve been reading during the summer with other book lovers! The library will supply snacks.

Out of This World Wednesdays! Grades 1-3

This is a registered program for children in grades 1-3. Get your groove on Wednesday afternoons! Each session will begin with a story or two and then prepare to get messy as we discover our individual artistic talents.

All programs begin at 2:30 p.m. and are approximately 60 minutes long.

Snack Pack! Book Group for 4th and 5th Graders

Calling all book lovers in the 4th & 5th grade! You are invited to participate in the library’s monthly book discussion group. Children entering 4th grade in the fall are invited to participate! The library will provide the snacks.  Books are available to checkout at the library. We will discuss Zita The Spacegirl by Ben Hatke  on Thursday, June 27th from 3-4 p.m. Other dates include Thursdays July 25th and August 22nd from 3-4 p.m. July and August titles TBD.

Read to Dewey the Therapy Dog!

 Thursday August 22nd 6-7 p.m.

 ‘Bone’ up on your reading skills! Dewey is a certified therapy dogs who loves to
listen to stories!!

Register to read to Dewey 2 weeks before the

program to be assigned a 10 minute time slot.

 

 

Meet Bruins Mascot Blades!

July 29th 2:30-3:30

Blades will be joining readers for a story, some game day fun, and a craft. Participants will get to dance with Blades, design their own space helmet, take pictures in a space photo booth, and more!

Jungle Jim gets into a 6-foot balloon!

Summer Reading Celebration with Jungle Jim: A Ballooniverse of Stories!

Children of all ages who participated in the library’s Summer Reading Club are invited to Memorial Hall on Thursday August 15th at 6:30pm for A Ballooniverse of Stories. Jungle Jim‘s Space themed balloon magic show features rocket propulsion science, celebrates the moon landing, Star Wars Jedi Training, and  a 6 foot galaxy explosion! Registration for A Ballooniverse of Stories begins Thursday, August 1st.  Please be sure to register all who plan to attend, both children and their caregivers.
